PREREQUISITE(S): Introduction to the Healthcare System (MBA296.3) or equivalent; or extensive work experience in the healthcare field

CLASS FORMAT (Will there be lectures, cases, or a mixture?):
Each class session will focus on a different health policy topic and will include a short presentation by a student team, followed by debate and discussion about the policy alternatives.

REQUIRED READINGS: Textbook on policy process and readings specific to the health policy topic

BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE (midterm, final, paper(s), project(s), class participation, or a mixture):

Policy presentation and analysis; current event; and class contribution.


ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this course is to provide students with:

Ø      a framework for analyzing policy problems

Ø      working knowledge of the policy process

Ø      an opportunity to discuss, debate, and analyze important policy topics facing the healthcare system

Examples of topics are drug pricing/importation, the uninsured, ethnic and racial disparities in health care, genetics and stem cell research. 

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Kristiana Raube, PhD is an Adjunct Professor at the Haas School of Business and the Executive Director of the Graduate Program in Health Management at the University of California Berkeley, a program that prepares students for leadership roles in the health services and health technology industries. Dr. Raube conducts research focusing on the delivery and financing of health services for vulnerable populations.  She has evaluated a large number of health programs, including ones focused on physician payment, quality of care, access to care, Medicaid managed care, infant mortality, prenatal care, and community-based health care. Moreover, Dr. Raube has worked both in the US and around the world advising on management, education, and delivery of health services. Dr. Raube received her doctorate in public policy from the RAND Graduate School of Policy Studies, her masters in public health from UCLA, and her bachelors of arts degree in biology from the University of Colorado.
