ABSTRACT OF COURSE CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:
 
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to an overview of the role of business and technology in poverty alleviation and sustainable development in developing regions of Africa, Asia and Latin America through:
 
-understanding the key development challenges facing the developing world in the 21st Century;
 
-identifying opportunities for sustainable business in  developing countries, especially among the poor;
 
-analyzing, from theory and practice, the link between technological innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable development;
 
-identifying and analyzing the prevailing features of the overall policy and reform environment that shape business and technology development in Africa, Asia and Latin America;
 
-introducing and discussing foreign aid, trade and foreign direct investment as tools for developing capacity to do business for sustainable development;
 
-building a higher level of generic expertise of what it takes to do business in developing countries;
 
-understanding the role of public-private partnerships in sustainable development.

 

-leadership and managerial dilemmas in navigating risk and uncertainty in developing regions
 
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
 
Dr. Theogene Rudasingwa has previously held positions of: Visiting Scholar, Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley, doing research on business development and entrepreneurship in Africa; Director of Cabinet, Office of the President of Rwanda; Rwanda's Ambassador to the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico; Rwanda's Representative to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund; and Liaison to the United Nations and African Union. Dr. Rudasingwa has also written and spoken on the subject of genocide, post-conflict healing and nation-building, as well as entrepreneurship, business and technology development in Africa.

 
Dr. Rudasingwa obtained his M.D degree from Makerere University in Uganda, and an honorary doctorate from Trinity College of Vermont, USA. He also holds an M.A. degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts.  Dr. Rudasingwa has participated in the World Economic Forum, Davos, Switzerland, as a Global Leader.
